How can you tell which side of the heart is the ventricle surface?

There are ventricles on both sides, but towards the bottom of the heart. The atria lie ontop of the ventricles. If you're given a cross section, the ventricle will have a much thicker muscular layer as it does the general pushing of blood to the lungs/body.
